Living in Sparta

Sparta is a very small town located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 1,872 people and two associated neighborhoods, Sparta is the 315th largest community in North Carolina.

Of important note, Sparta is also a town of artists. Sparta has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Sparta’s character.

A relatively large number of people in Sparta telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 14.81% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Sparta has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Sparta has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Sparta than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Sparta may be for you.

Residents of the town have the good fortune of having one of the shortest daily commutes compared to the rest of the country. On average, they spend only 18.21 minutes getting to work every day.

Sparta is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

In terms of college education, the citizens of Sparta rank slightly lower than the national average. 15.32% of adults 25 and older in Sparta have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, while 21.84% of adults have a 4-year degree or higher in the average American community.

The per capita income in Sparta in 2018 was $21,537, which is low income relative to North Carolina and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $86,148 for a family of four.

Sparta is a very ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Sparta home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Sparta residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Sparta also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 14.37% of the town’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Sparta include German, English, Irish, Scottish, and Scots-Irish.

The most common language spoken in Sparta is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Italian.
